Denman College
At one of our meetings members learned about the history of their very own Denman College, which is located in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. A beautiful Georgian country house built in mellow Cotswold stone and standing in 17 acres of land, Denman offers members and non-members alike the opportunity to participate in a huge variety of classes and courses on every subject under the sun.
The College has its own teaching blocks incorporating studios, lecture rooms and 13 fully equipped kitchen bays (including one adapted for a wheelchair user) together with high quality accommodation for 60 students. Most of the bedrooms are en-suite and each is 'adopted' by a WI Federation so the decor and furnishings, mostly hand made, are representative of the County. Visitors to the College enjoy excellent catering and a chance to meet like minded people from all over the country. For more information, pictures and details of all the courses on offer, visit the College website - www.denmancollege.org.uk |
Craft Evening
Joyce McDonald, Joan Ware and Shirley Shepherd demonstrated how to make attractive greetings cards, Christmas decorations and crocheted items in turn to small groups of members at our November meeting. Groans of frustration turned to expressions of delight as the finished articles took shape!
The photograph shows the intrepid trio relaxing after what must have been a full-on meeting for them! |
Some Recent Events
Focus on Suzy Brown
Suzy Brown, a much loved member of Southwell WI, was born in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. She learned to sew at a very early age but it was the strict nuns in the convent where she was sent that honed her skill. Remarkably, as a young child she had no needle and produced beautiful work with thread tied to a pin! Later, she attended a convent school where she taught younger children to sew, then became a nun herself. Again, her skills were utilised as she sewed for the church.
Her life took a different direction when she was 21. Following a serious illness, she left the convent and went to work with a doctor. She learned English from the Bishop of Gibraltar and it was in Gibraltar that she met her husband who was serving in the army.
Eventually coming to England in 1965, she joined Southwell WI. After much persuading, she agreed to be our speaker at our recent September meeting.
Suzy brought many examples of her work to the meeting to show the members and we agreed it is impossible to praise Suzy’s needlework – there are no adequate words that would do it justice. Perhaps the nearest is ‘exquisite’. Her work includes the finest, most delicate embroidery to the boldest appliqué and gold-work, with everything in between.

Suzy has made robes for church dignitaries, wonderful murals and wall hangings, delightful clothing personalised for the owners, beautiful household items and even a costume for Mary Queen of Scots (as portrayed by Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle!) Our lovely table cloth was one of her pieces. It incorporates the Bramley apple, apple blossom, the Minster and a horn, which is the symbol used by the Nottinghamshire Federation of WIs.
Suzy’s latest project is a large, embroidered coat of arms commissioned by a local family which, together with her other displayed items, will surely be admired for generations to come.
